USA Today: Taliban showing weakness in south Afghanistan

The Taliban have struggled to mount an effective resistance to a major offensive to secure an area around a massive hydroelectric dam in southern Afghanistan, a top US commander said Monday.

The Taliban response “has been surprisingly small,” Marine Major General John Toolan, commander of coalition forces in the southwest, said in a telephone interview.

    If Taliban have a real weakness, we may hope on a period where NATO forces may consolidate security on Afghanistan and begin a new step for country democracy.
    We must hope that this weakness is not limited to a small period of time, but should be an initial cediment of terrorism organization and, then, an initial phase where a peace phase may have a consolidation.
    Our actions have, now, aimed to make an hope a reality
