Decorated Gurkha back on Helmand front line

Corporal Tilak, 2nd Battalion The Royal Gurka Rifles, sits atop the rusting hulk of a Soviet tank in Nahr-e Saraj, Helmand province [Picture: Crown Copyright/MOD 2011] A Gurkha soldier who received a Mention in Dispatches (MID) for bravely holding off an insurgent ambush on an Afghan National Police (ANP) patrol two years ago is back in Helmand once again.

Corporal Tilak Kumar Rai, 2nd Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles (2 RGR), deployed to Afghanistan in the summer of 2009 for Operation HERRICK 10. Then a Lance Corporal, as a member of the Police Mentoring Team, he fought alongside the Afghan patrolmen against insurgents in the Nad 'Ali district.
