‘Good morning Afghanistan! Radio 1 Big Dawg’s shout out to our brave troops’
RAP DJ Tim Westwood admits he was humbled by Our Boys when he broadcast his Radio 1Xtra show live from a war zone. Earlier this month, the “Big Dawg” took his show to troops in Camp Bastion, Afghanistan, for five days, writes Virginia Wheeler, Defence Correspondent for the Sun.
Here he explains why it was one of his best gigs.
‘Presenting my radio show for BBC Radio 1Xtra for a whole week from Camp Bastion with the British Forces Broadcasting Service was one of the best experiences I’ve had. The BFBS studio was built in a 20ft shipment container and was right next to the mess hall. During the show, troops would just drop in to do shout-outs for back home.
I was amazed how hard everyone worked doing an incredibly dangerous job. They all worked every day, with no days off. Morale felt high and there was a real buzz that we were there, but I think they would have preferred Fearne Cotton!’
