The Dambusters play a key role in Afghanistan

June 9, 2011

Despite operating in the Middle East for a number of years, the RAF’s most famous squadron is currently taking part in its first deployment to Afghanistan.

617 Squadron, also known as ‘The Dambusters’ is providing a vital role to troops on the ground from a height of up to 50,000 ft. In many ways the airmen believe comparisons can be drawn between this deployment and the historic Dambusters raid during World War Two.

Tristan Nicholls of BFBS recently spent time with the Dambusters at Kandahar airfield. Click on the image below to see the Dambusters in action, with previously unreleased cockpit and reconnaisance pod footage, plus interviews with the Tornado aircrew, groundcrew and Imagery Analyst experts.
