The Women of Gareshk Celebrate International Women’s Day.

March 19, 2011

Gareshk, the economic capital of Helmand Province hosted a female shura this week. More typically associated with the men; shura’s are an Afghan form of meeting where business and discussions take place. Last week though, 300 women from the area, many widowed by the Insurgents, gathered for their own discussions to celebrate International Women’s Day – an opportunity that would have been impossible until the recent increase in regional security and stability.

In this report by Mel Preen of NATO Channel TV, she meets some of the brave and inspiring women who took many risks during the years of Taliban rule, to bring hope to the future of Afghanistan.

being given the opportunity to learn helpful skills like sewing and knitting for the women who have to stay in the home will give them confidence and perhaps encourage more outings amongst their peers. Trust in ISAF troops not to alienate them will be a great boost. Only then will the old taboos be seen as irrelevant and encourage the women to strive for greater autonomy.
