Day of sport at Camp Bastion
Camp Bastion hosted two major sporting events today.
At 7am, 672 runners congregated for the start of the Bastion Marathon and Half-Marathon; raising over $12,000 (£7,700) for a number of chosen charities. Along with these elite athletes, the field was also joined by Batman, Superman, Wonderwoman, Santa….and some fruit!
Later in the day, as the temperature climbed to 27 degrees, 8 teams from the UK, US, Denmark, Bahrain and Afghanistan took part in the Op HERRICK 13 International Football Competition. Teams gathered at the Camp Shorabak (Afghan National Army base) football stadium, in front of some very animated and passionate supporters.
After many hard-fought matches, the competition final saw the RAF Military Police team take on the team from Bahrain with what appeared to be a deadlocked match decided by a fantastic long-distance half volley by Cpl Lowes; resulting in a 1-0 victory.
On behalf of his team, Cpl Lowes received the winners trophy from the ANA Garrison Commander…and the other teams went home empty-handed!
