Lieutenant Islam Bibi: Protecting the Elections
Although the taliban threat to voters yesterday was high, female police officers were deployed to polling stations nationwide yesterday to ensure that everyone going in or out could be searched for weapons or bombs.
In Helmand Province, Lieutenant Islam Bibi trained her officers to be stationed in the female sections of the polling booths.
“I trained twenty girls to carry out this role,” said Lieutenant Bibi. “We enforced good security so that more people could come out to vote.”
Lieutenant Bibi has been a policewoman for the past six years. She is among a rising number of female officers in the Afghan National Police.
At the provincial police headquarters in Lashkar Gah there are now sixteen police women in the service, some of whom were police officers long before the Taliban regime took power but they had to give up their jobs until the Taliban was ousted in 2001.
