It is with great sadness that the Ministry of Defence must confirm that Lieutenant Edward Drummond-Baxter and Lance Corporal Siddhanta Kunwar, both from 1st Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles (1 RGR), were killed on Tuesday 30 October 2012 while on patrol in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province. Both men were attached to 40 Commando Royal Marines.

Lieutenant Drummond-Baxter and Lance Corporal Kunwar were based in Checkpoint Prrang in the southern area of Nahr-e Saraj.

On 30 October they were participating in a shura (meeting) with Afghan Uniform Policemen inside the checkpoint.

On completion of the shura, they were shot and killed by a man wearing an Afghan police uniform who had been attending the meeting.

WE HAVE BEEN HONOURED TO KNOW THESE GURKHA SOLDIERS AND CAN ONLY DESCRIBE THEM AS THE BRAVEST OF THE BRAVE. TO BE TAKEN FROM THEIR FAMILIES AND THEIR COLLEAGUES IN THIS COWARDLY WAY IS DESPICABLE. OUR PRAYERS AND OUR THOUGHTS ARE WITH ALL OF THE COMPANIES OF THE 1 RGR WHO ARE SERVING IN AFGHANISTAN AND WITH THEIR FAMILIES BOTH IN NEPAL AND IN SHORNCLIFFE. – WE SAY PHERI BHETAULA AND DHANYA BAAD. FROM THE MO AND JO TEAM IN SOMERSET.

So very very sad. To die in this way is awful, it’s about time we got out of Herrick. I’m sure the guys would much rather die (if they have to) in a fair fire fight rather than this or an IED. RIP one and all, much respect xx

Tragic news and sincere thoughts and prayers go out to the families.

Unfortunately these attacks seem to be increasingly more common and the situation is certainly unsettling for one who has a brother in the area working side-by-side with unifomed Afgans.

Who are these turn-coat/planted Afgan police/soldiers…Taliban or Narco Gangs?

Isn’t it time to leave the Afgans to their own tribal ways and spend military budget on a big wall around the country?
